Over the years, we have developed an array of treatment modalities to help our patients overcome chronic degenerative illnesses. In most cases, choice of a particular therapy is guided by sophisticated lab testing to assess imbalances in biochemistry. To learn about the specific treatments, please click on one of the options below.
IV Vitamin C Therapy
Intravenous vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid) was originally proposed by two-time Nobel Prize winning chemist Linus Pauling as a way to treat viral infections and cancers. Research indicates that IV vitamin C (but not oral vitamin C), when administered at the proper dose, has the potential to selectively kill tumor cells in a manner similar to many conventional chemotherapy drugs, as reported in the 6 April 2004 Annals of Internal Medicine. The vitamin C generates hydrogen peroxide, which kills the cancerous cells while leaving healthy cells unharmed. Clinical trial data suggest that IV vitamin C can work well when given in tandem with conventional chemotherapy, and can also be effective in cases that have not responded previously to chemotherapy. Our IV vitamin C protocol includes specific cofactors or nutrients and metabolites that further enhance the effectiveness of the therapy. The exact plan will depend on the diagnosis and whether or not you are undergoing conventional treatments. IV vitamin C may also be very effective against chronic viral and bacterial infections such as those associated with Lyme disease.
Vitamin C/Mineral Infusion
The primary purpose of these vitamin C/mineral infusions is to bolster immune system functioning and replete minerals that may have been depleted by poor dietary habits, pollution, stress, medical treatments and intestinal malabsorption. Vitamin C is utilized rapidly to quench free radicals and can enhance the functioning of natural killer (NK) cells and other key immune cells. Many individuals can still function with low levels of minerals and B-vitamins, and yet they feel and function much better after the infusion. These infusions provide 25 grams of vitamin C, along with an array of amino acids, minerals, and B-complex vitamins that are added to 500cc sterile water and infused over three hours.
IV Mega-Nutrient Infusion
The primary purpose of IV mega-nutrient infusions is to bolster nutritional reserves and cellular vitality. Individuals who have become nutritionally depleted and/or experienced a stressful medical event typically experience a marked improvement in physical health, mood and energy levels after receiving one or more of these infusions. Our multi-nutrient formulas are designed to provide a comprehensive array of nutrients. These formulas can also be tailored to address specific needs, such as boosting nutrients needed for athletic performance or for specific disease conditions, or that have become depleted for one reason or another.
IV Mineral Infusion
Mineral infusions are helpful for rapidly replenishing depleted levels of essential elements such as magnesium, selenium, zinc, and iron, based on individual patient needs. The standard multi-mineral protocol is similar to the multi-nutrient protocol but provides a higher concentration of minerals, smaller amount of Vitamin C, and no amino acids. Specific mineral infusions may also be utilized for different situations. For example, iron infusions can provide a way to reverse iron-deficiency anemia without causing constipation and intestinal dysbiosis (bacterial imbalances), problems associated with oral iron supplementation. Magnesium-rich infusions are also a helpful way to quickly build up mineral levels prior to chelation therapy and can have a number of cardiovascular and neuromuscular benefits as well.
Iron deficiency anemia is a condition in which the body lacks iron and therefore cannot produce enough hemoglobin, a substance in red blood cells that enables them to carry oxygen. This can lead to fatigue and shortness of breath. Although this situation can usually be remedied with oral iron, it is sometimes necessary to use either intravenous iron or an intramuscular injection. For example, if someone has intestinal yeast overgrowth or dysbiosis, they may be unable to absorb iron no matter how much they take orally. The preservative-free iron can be given intravenously, and generally 3-4 infusions are sufficient for reversing a deficiency situation. In order to guard against a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis), a small test dose is always administered prior to the main infusion. If you do not react to the test dose, you should be fine to receive the full infusion. Depending on the degree of your iron deficit and how often you receive your infusion (a once-monthly infusion is typical), it can take several months for your body iron stores to return to an optimal level.
As the master antioxidant in the body, glutathione has a range of diverse functions, including core protection against free radicals, bolstering the immune system, and removing mercury and other toxic metals. Blood glutathione levels have been identified as among the key indicators of enduring health and longevity. Researchers at Stanford have found that low glutathione may be a central factor in the progression of many illnesses—cancer, heart disease, diabetes, HIV/AIDS, asthma, bronchitis, and endocrine imbalances, to name a few. Because supplementing with oral glutathione is unable to raise the blood level of this core antioxidant, IV glutathione is an excellent alternative. Physicians in Florida have documented success with IV glutathione in Parkinson’s disease and other neurodegenerative disorders. Many patients—both young and old—respond extremely well to IV glutathione. Individuals who seem to benefit the most are those who have high levels of toxins in their bodies, or who have undergone chemotherapy, radiotherapy or other intensive medical treatments.
IV Alpha Lipoic Acid
Recent clinical research has introduced IV Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA) as an innovative cancer therapy and longevity medicine strategy. ALA is a versatile antioxidant that has the unique ability to protect many body systems, as well as to protect DNA and mitochondria. As we age, mitochondrial function is impaired, and ALA has an ability to help reverse this degenerative process. ALA also works closely with other antioxidants, “recycling” them and thus making them much more effective. It directly recycles and extends the metabolic lifespans of vitamin C, glutathione, and coenzyme Q10, and it indirectly renews vitamin E. ALA is currently being studied as a preventive and/or treatment for many age-related diseases. In terms of cancer, ALA has been shown to trigger apoptosis (programmed cell death) in various types of cancer cells (lung, liver, colon, leukemic cells). Preliminary clinical research suggests the potential for therapeutic efficacy against advanced-stage cancers when alternated with IV vitamin C.
Toxic metals such as mercury, lead, arsenic and cadmium can accumulate in the body over time and exact a heavy toll on health and well-being. Metals such as lead, manganese, aluminum, and mercury have proved to be neurotoxic (toxic to the brain) and are suspected of promoting heart disease and long-term neurodegenerative problems such as Alzheimer’s disease. For example, the list of cardiovascular problems that have been linked with mercury toxicity is extensive, including hypertension, coronary heart disease, heart attack, cardiac arrhythmias, carotid artery blockage, strokes, atherosclerosis, and reduced heart rate variability, as reported in the August 2011 Journal of Clinical Hypertension. Many people show dramatic improvements in their health when these metals are removed with the help of chelation therapy and other methods. Toxic metal removal includes a combination of strategies, notably chelation therapy (IV and oral) and use of various natural compounds that accelerate the elimination of metals stored in the bones, central nervous system and other tissues. Research reported in the 15 April 2007 issue of Cellular & Molecular Biology indicates that chelation therapy is most effective when combined with specific antioxidant nutrients and herbals to support optimal detoxification. Other oral strategies may be used to accelerate toxic metal removal beyond what can be accomplished with chelation therapy alone.
The Carolina Center embraces a number of detoxification strategies that can be incorporated into one’s lifestyle. Various nutritional and herbal supplements, in conjunction with specific dietary strategies (juicing and/or modified fasts), can be very effective in purging the body of toxins that have accumulated over the years. In addition, we will occasionally recommend a Liver/Gall Bladder Flush in order to give the entire GI tract a rest while allowing damaged epithelial cells to repair themselves and improving the ability of the GI tract to absorb nutrients. This “flush” enables the liver to more efficiently break down and eliminate stored toxins. In many cases, we will recommend a modified fast and/or Liver/Gall Bladder Flush after completion of any antimicrobial (either herbal or pharmaceutical) use to destroy pathogenic intestinal organisms, the idea being that after the kill off, there needs to be a clean out. It is very soon after a successful detoxification program that many patients note the greatest improvement in their symptoms with elimination of most fatigue, body aches, muscle pain, joint aches, and any GI distress.
The colon can be a major source of toxicity and malaise. Anyone who has been constipated for an extended period of times knows this from experience. When those same individuals have their colon cleared of toxic accumulations, they report feeling much better, often with greatly improved moods and energy levels, as well as a reduction in various inflammatory problems. Colon hydrotherapy is a process of removing stagnant fecal material from the wall of the colon, including material that has become stuck within the numerous small pouches in the large intestine (haustra). This, in turn, prevents the buildup of bacterial toxins that can enter the portal and lymphatic system and overburden the liver. Colon hydrotherapy is performed using a colon hydrotherapy machine and is a natural method for achieving these goals, sparing patients who respond poorly to laxatives from possibly negative consequences.
Constipation, or inability to easily have at least one complete bowel movement daily, is among the main reasons people pursue this form of treatment, though anyone who suffers from abdominal distention, gas pains, and irritable bowel symptoms can benefit from the treatment. We also find that patients with chronic skin problems experience profound improvement with their symptoms after undergoing a series of colonic treatments. Other indications for Colon Hydrotherapy include preparation of the bowel for colonoscopy, barium enema, or surgery, as well as treatment of patients with severe fecal impaction.

Cleansing Nutritional & Herbal Regimens
The Carolina Center embraces a number of detoxification strategies that can be incorporated into one’s lifestyle. These include modified fasts, nutritional and herbal regimens, and the Liver/Gall Bladder Flush, which is combined with a 10-day modified fast. The Liver/Gall Bladder Flush is designed to give the entire GI tract a rest while allowing damaged epithelial cells to repair themselves and improving the ability of the GI tract to absorb nutrients. This enables the liver to more efficiently break down and eliminate stored toxins. This program is usually recommended after completion of any antimicrobial (either herbal or pharmaceutical) use to destroy pathogenic intestinal organisms, the idea being that after the kill off, there needs to be a clean out. It is during this time that many patients note the greatest improvement in their symptoms with elimination of most fatigue, body aches, muscle pain, joint aches, and any GI distress.
Hyperbaric Therapy is the use of oxygen (or air) at greater than atmospheric pressure, resulting in an increase in oxygen concentration in all tissues of the body. Under these circumstances, no energy is needed to deliver the oxygen into tissues as opposed to normal circumstances with numerous energy- requiring steps being necessary for the movement of oxygen through the lungs, into hemoglobin, and into cells. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is currently indicated as an important adjunctive therapy for:
- Radiation Tissue Damage (Soft Tissue and Osteoradionecrosis)
- Clostridial Myonecrosis (Gas Gangrene)
- Compromised Skin Grafts and Flaps
- Crush Injury, Compartment Syndrome, and Acute Traumatic Ischemias
- Necrotizing Soft Tissue (Subcutaneous, Muscle, Fascia) Infections
- Osteomyelitis (Refractory to antibiotics)
- Problem Non-Healing Wounds
Nutritional and herbal medicine comprises a major component of our care of patients at the Carolina Center. We have found over the years that many patients benefit from the individualized use of nutrients, nutraceuticals, superfood concentrates, herbals, phytochemicals, and other specialized products such as glandulars and nutrient metabolites. With the help of nutritional and bio-energetic testing, we can help you select the best nutritional products for your money. We can then further fine-tune these recommendations over time so that you derive the optimum benefit from the products you are using. In addition, we may recommend Nutrition Education sessions to help deepen your understanding of the rationale for using nutritional and botanical aides, as well as to help you further refine your supplement regimen.
With age come progressive reductions in most or all hormones that your body produces. These changes include estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, thyroid hormones, DHEA and other adrenal hormones, as well as hormones made in the brain, including melatonin and growth hormone. In order to help your body function more like it did when you were younger, you need to recover those more youthful hormone levels. Thus, replacement of hormone deficiencies can have dramatic effects not only on your overall health, vitality and quality of life, but also in terms of preventing illnesses in the future. Among the main hormonal therapies we offer are the following:
• Bioidentical estrogen and progesterone replacements for menopausal women, offering the greatest protection from cancer and heart disease compared to synthetic hormones such as Premarin.
• Natural progesterone replacement for pre-menopausal women experiencing PMS, skin problems, menstrual cramps, and other symptoms of estrogen dominance.
• Testosterone replacement for both men and women for improved muscle strength, stamina, mental function, mood, and sexual function.
• DHEA replacement for stabilization of all hormones and support of testosterone levels.
• Natural thyroid hormone replacements to include pharmaceutical and herbal therapies along with detailed laboratory testing to identify those with clinical hypothyroidism and hypometabolism.
• Therapies to address adrenal dysfunction, both hypo and hyper function, both conditions associated with chronic stress.
• Replacement of human growth hormone for treatment of documented growth hormone deficiencies in patients with age related degenerative conditions.
